Next Steps for Artists

SculptWho? The Cascadia Residency seeks artists of any discipline, including, but not limited to: music, visual art, creative writing, drama, dance, and design. The program targets emerging artists who have reached a level of excellence in their work, but who wish to go deeper in explorations of the theological implications of vocation, connectivity to the Body of Christ, and how excellence in the creative task might impact Cascadian culture.

What? Outcomes for artists include:

  • Deeper Understanding of your Vocation as an Artist
  • Reconciliatory Relationships with Churches in Your Community
  • Exhibitions and Exposure through Commissioned Work from the Church
  • Participation in a Cohort of Artists Dedicated to Spiritual and Artistic Growth
  • Theological Education in the Arts

How? The ten artists who are a part of the residency will be supported by ten regional churches and will partner with church leaders and congregations in conversation, learning, and fellowship throughout the nine-month period. Artists selected for the program will receive a stipend to support travel to two retreats (September and November, 2016), the Cascadia Worship & Arts Conference (February, 2017), and a two-week residency in late April 2017.

Resident Artists commit to build relationships with one another, and with the ministry leaders and patrons who are also involved in the residency program. Community will be fostered through common readings, creative rhythms, spiritual practices, and sharing meals together. In the months between retreats, conference, and residency, each artist will commit to visit partner churches in their region to share about the creative process and the network of relationships being formed throughout the program period. At the end of the nine-month period, artists will present work to the churches involved in ways that have become meaningful for both artist and church during the program. This nuances of this presentation will be developed throughout the nine months of learning and working together.
